The Victoria Falls, Zambia and Zimbabwe’s most renowned tourist attraction is one of the
Seven Natural Wonders of the World and an acclaimed UNESCO World Heritage Site. Locals described the Falls as “The Smoke that Thunders,” while its Ndebele name is Mosi-oa-Tunya.

The first European to explore the area in 1855 was Sir David Livingstone, who famously wrote
“Scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight” when describing the Victoria Falls. A 1.7 km stretch of thunderous water tumbling over a sheer basalt cliff-face, falling 100 metres into a gorge, creates one of the world’s most spectacular waterfalls.
At the height of the rainy season about 30 million litres of water flow into the gorge, creating viewpoints such as the
Boiling Pot, Devils Cataract, Main Falls, Rainbow Falls, Horseshoe Falls, Armchair Falls and the
Eastern Cataract. The thunder of the Falls and the spray in the air can be heard and seen for many kilometres, and the best views can be seen from the Zimbabwean side of the Falls in the Rain Forest, or from above in a helicopter.
The towns on either side of the Falls, Livingstone in Zambia and Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, have become
a destination for adrenaline junkies in search of adventure. Visitors can take part in a 110 metre bungee jump off the Victoria Falls Bridge, go white-water rafting on the rapids below the Falls, take part in a high wire swing across the gorge, or kayak on the upper Zambezi. While those in search of more relaxing activities can enjoy river cruises, scenic flights over the Falls, elephant back safaris, golf and shopping. There is a wide range of air, land and water-based activities to keep every visitor occupied and enjoying themselves.
Livingstone and Victoria Falls both boast a range of world-class hotels, luxury lodges, exciting resorts and
international cuisine with a local twist. The local people are amongst the friendliest on the continent, exuding warmth and welcoming hospitality towards visitors. They also have a vibrant culture which they are happy to share in the form of African song, dance, drums and a fabulous feast of traditional food.
There is something for everyone here, and spending time at this natural wonder is not to be missed. Pictures of the Victoria Falls are always scenic and spectacular – but the real thing is even better! |
