This region consists of a semi-arid bushveld plateau, which has become the playground of a range of holidaymakers, from overseas and neighbouring Gauteng.
Its major attraction is the fantasy resort of Sun City and The Palace of the Lost City. This spectacular entertainment world rises out of the surrounding bushveld, offering attractions like The Valley of the Waves, two superb 18-hole golf courses, a casino, landscaped gardens, live entertainment, restaurants, 3D movie houses, video arcades and much more.
Neighbouring malaria-free Pilanesberg National Park sustains the world's third largest white rhino population, as well as the Big Five. This park is situated on the eroded remains of a 1200 million-year-old extinct alkaline crater, one of only three of its kind in the world. The park also offers unique game activities like hot-air balloon safaris, bush walks and bush braais (barbeques).
The splendid Madikwe Game Reserve, bordering on Botswana, is one of South Africa's largest game reserves. Madikwe has become a prime safari destination, with the added advantage of being malaria-free.
The reserve's open woodlands, grasslands and rocky hills is home to 66 large mammal species including the Big Five, and 300 resident and migrant bird species. Operation Phoenix, a reintroduction programme operated at Madikwe, is the largest game translocation exercise in the world.
Madikwe is an area steeped in legend as far back as the Stone Age. The reserve is testimony to a truly enlightened conservation plan, which has preserved a unique wilderness area of Kalahari bushveld in one of the most remote regions of South Africa.
